MWC 2017: Airtel and Viavi release whitepaper on effects of smartphones on network experience

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Airtel and Viavi have released the results of a joint study they conducted on the effects of smartphone quality on how users experience telecom infrastructure. The study was conducted in India, crowd-sourced from Airtel’s live network and leveraging the location intelligence. The performance of over 8,000 unique handsets was analysed, over 3G and 4G networks.

Abhay Savargaonkar, Director – Network Services (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel said “Airtel is committed to delivering an exceptional experience to our customers. Given the massive scale of customers served by our network, this study provides a 360-degree view on customer experience and generates insights for collaborating with device OEMs to serve the customer even better.” The study was intended to provide smartphone manufacturers with detailed feedback of real world performances, so appropriate measures can be taken to improve the experience for the end users.

Out of the 8,000 smartphone models studied, over 80 percent of the users had chosen only 300 models. Among the top 128 models 23 percent of 4G smartphones and 13 percent of 3G smartphones failed to meet the minimum performance standards expected.

The study confirmed that there is a variation in the types of smartphones and a corresponding variation in the user experience of the telecom infrastructure, in the same network conditions. The whitepaper with the results of the study is available online (PDF).
