MWC 2017: LG G6 announced with 5.7-inch Full Vision display, 3300mAh battery, dual 13MP cameras

LG G6 has been announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today. Although, there is still a day to go for the MWC to officially begin, we have already seen the launch of Blackberry KEYOne smartphone and now the LG G6. There are more keynotes expected to happen today.

From the outset, LG did not focus on the specifications much. According to Juno Cho, the president of Mobile Communications at LG Electronics said that the competition in the future will not be about specs, but about usability. Also, a lot of time was spent in explaining the technologies and design elements behind the LG G6.

The LG G6 is the current flagship from the South Korean giant and comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset, which is the last generation flagship along with 4GB RAM. In terms of storage, you get 32GB onboard storage with the option to expand the storage using a microSD card. It runs on Android 7.1 Nougat along with the LG skin atop it called UX 6. Google Assistant will come baked in with LG G6.

It comes with a 3300mAh battery and measures 7.9mm thick and weighs 163g. The LG G6 comes with an all metal body along with glass construction, with rounded corners. LG has ensured that the camera module is flush with the rear side of the phone. The LG G6 is also the first LG phone to come with IP68 certification which ensures water and dust resistance.

The main feature of the LG G6 is its 18:9 aspect ratio display. The phone features a 5.7-inch QuadHD+ resolution (2880 x 1440 pixels) with the FullVision display. LG claims to have solved the problem of large size displays in compact phone bodies with the FullVision display. The focus was on providing a large display phone which is capable of being used one-handed. To this effect, the bezels on the top and sides of the phone are extremely thin.

The idea to go for an 18:9 aspect ratio has been attributed to going with a Univisium standard that is used for shooting feature films and TV shows. According to LG, the 18:9 aspect ratio gives a better immersive experience and does not lead to cropping of original content. According to LG, most of the entertainment apps on the Google Play store support 18:9 aspect ratio. For the unsupported content, LG will add in a ‘zoom mode’.

LG G6 will also be the first smartphone to support Dolby Vision. Apart from this it will support HDR 10 as well.

The LG G6 comes with two 13MP rear cameras, one of which has a wide angle lens where as the other one showing normal view. There is a 5MP front facing camera which has a 100-degree field of view which provides wide-angle selfies. The 13MP regular rear cameras comes with an f/1.8 aperture and supports optical image stabilisation, whereas the wide angle 13MP camera comes with an f/2.4 aperture without any image stabilisation.

Just under the camera module, which is protected by Gorilla Glass 4, you have the power button which also houses the finger print scanner.

Along with the camera module, you also get the Fullscreen UX experience which supports features such as square camera snap shot feature, match camera feature, Square Camera grid shot, Guide shot, Wide front selfie with auto shot, 360 panorama, and more.

LG also laid stress on the fact that it has made the G6 go through extra safety measures to ensure that its battery is safe. Battery capacity has been bumped up from the one that was found on its predecessor, to 3300mAh. It supports fast charging and comes with a USB Type C port for the same.

The LG G6 will be available in three colours: Mystic White, Astro Black and Ice Platinum. Pricing and availability details were not announced at the launch event. We will update the copy when we get more information.
