MWC 2017: Nokia inks deal with Xiaomi in non-telco push

After a number of announcements about its 5G networks at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2017 (MWC), Nokia also announced that it has signed a deal with China’s Xiaomi in an attempt to branch out beyond its current core base of customers.

According to European Communications , Nokia will provide electronics and internet company Xiaomi with technology that will help Xiaomi overcome its “fast-growing traffic demands”.

Nokia’s data interconnect solutions will provide a link to Xiaomi’s seven data centres in and around Beijing using fibre networks for its private cloud services.

Nokia won the contract and announced it as a part of its pre-MWC show.

Apart from Xiaomi, Nokia also won a deal to provide a communications network to power Portugal’s national railways infrastructure operator.

Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri during the announcement said that non-telcos would require more than twice as much capacity as compared to its core base which includes telecom customers.

Nokia would focus on the world’s top 4000 large enterprises. The financial details about Nokia’s Xiaomi deal were not disclosed.

The Finnish company also secured a 3-year deal with Telefonica to build networks in London, making it the leading network supplier in the UK, surpassing Ericsson in the process.
