Spotify launches three new original podcast series

Spotify is amping up in its efforts to deliver differentiated content to its users by announcing three new original podcast series that will be available exclusively on the audio streaming platform. Showstopper and Unpacked are the names of two of the shows. A third show is not yet named, but will explore the extraordinary career of the celebrated music industry executive Chris Lighty and his untimely death through a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Showstopper will be hosted by Naomi Zeichner, Editor in Chief of The Fader, and will explore the intersection of Television Shows and Music. The show will be pop culture analysis of the best music moments from television shows. There will be interviews with music supervisors of the show. The first season will feature discussions of music moments from OC, Scrubs and Stranger Things. This is the first of the three shows to be launched, and is already available on Spotify.

Unpacked will be co-hosted by Matt FX, music supervisor for Comedy Central and Michele Santucci from Spotify Studios. The two will visit music festivals all around the United States and talk to musicians, filmmakers, app-makers and even food makers. Users sitting at home will get a sense of the different music festivals. The first episode will be about the South by Southwest conference and festival in Austin, Texas. The series is scheduled for a 14 March Premiere.

The Chris Lighty Story is the working title for an original podcast, and will explore the role of the music executive on the careers of hip hop artists such as 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, and Puff Daddy. The podcast will touch upon the topics of race, mental illnesses, the price of success, and the development of new art forms. The series will trace the twisting path that lead to the premature death of Chris Lighty, which left the music world reeling.

Spotify has indicated that more original podcasts will be revealed over the course of the year.
