The Xiaomi Mi 5c is out and it’s available for around Rs 15,000 in China, features custom Surge 1 SoC
Xiaomi has officially taken the wraps off the Mi 5c in China, it’s first phone with a custom chipset.
The phone itself features a 5.15-inch, Full HD display with a maximum brightness of 550 nits. Xiaomi is also harping about the fact that the phone features 2048 brightness levels, making brightness control more granular than previous offerings.
The phone is powered by Xiaomi’s in-house Surge 1 SoC, which we’ll go into more detail later. Essentially, the Surge 1 is an SoC with eight ARM Cortex A53 cores built on the 28nm process (modern, flagship SoCs are built on 16nm and 10nm processes). 4 cores are clocked at 2.2GHz and the remaining 4 at 1.4GHz.
The phone features a 2,860 mAh battery with fast charging at 9V and 2A over USB-C. There’s only one memory configuration available, which offers 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 64GB of eMMC 5.0 storage.
The rear camera is a 12MP unit with 1.25 micron pixels, which Xiaomi says improves low-light performance. The phone also supports single-frame HDR. The phone will be upgradeable to Android 7.1.
It’s expected to launch in China at a retail price of RMB 1,499 (around Rs 15,000).
If Xiaomi’s benchmark claims are to be believed, the Surge S1 SoC is much faster than the mid-range Snapdragon 625 in GPU scores and the CPU tests. Overall, the Surge 1 appears to be competitive with the Snapdragon 625.
