The new Apple iPhone 7s and iPhone 8 are expected to come with True Tone displays: Report
The rumours will never cease. The latest rumours regarding Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7s and iPhone 8 suggest that Apple will be incorporating the iPad Pro’s True Tone capabilities.
If you remember, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro introduced a True Tone mechanism where Apple used a more capable ambient light sensor to determine the colour and brightness of the ambient light and adjusted the display to suit it.
The technology is best explained with an analogy. Take a piece of paper. It’s white under a tube-light, yellow under a yellow light and red under a red light. In the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, the colour tone of the display would change with the change in ambient light.
It’s a subtle change to the way a display works, but experience tells us that it’s worth it. It’s not one of those must-have features, but once you get used to it, the lack of it can be quite a jarring experience.
MacRumours got its hands on a report from Barclays which stated that the iPhone 7s, 7s Plus and 8 will have an Oled screen with a “full spectral sensing” ambient light sensor. Apparently, these will be sourced from AMS, an Austrian semiconductor company.
Barclays estimates that the cost of the display units will go up by about $0.60 to $1.
