Xiaomi working on a sub-$200 smartphone that will be launched on 28 February

Chinese smartphone vendor Xiaomi is skipping Mobile World Congress this year but there have been rumours of the company working on their own mobile processors. According to a source, the company has sent out invites for a media event marked for 28 February where it is expected to announce a new budget handset.

The smartphone is said to come with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. The phone is expected to be priced at 1,299 CNY (Rs 13,000 approx). According to Digitimes, Xiaomi will also unveil its new in-house mobile CPUs at the same event.

These will be the same rumoured chipsets that have been doing rounds and also saw a page on Weibo. The first two Pinecone CPUs will be the V670 and the V790. The new CPUs are being developed via Xiaomi’s subsidiary, Pinecone Electronics.

The V670 CPU will be manufactured on a 28-nanometer process and will feature four high-performance Cortex-A53 cores and four Cortex-A53 low-power cores along with an ARM-based Mali-T860 MP2 GPU.

The V970 is a flagship chip which will include four Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores, paired with a Mali G71 MP12 GPU. This one will be built on the 10nm process but will only be available at the end of this year.
