MWC 2017: Qualcomm announces new 5G modem family for high-speed network speeds

Chip maker Qualcomm has announced the expansion of its Snapdragon X50 5G modem family to include 5G New Radio (NR) multi-mode chipset solutions. According to the company it will be compliant with the 3GPP-based 5G NR global system.

Supporting sub-6 GHz frequencies and multi-band millimeter wave spectrum, the new modems come with a unified 5G design for all major spectrum types and bands.  The X50 5G modem family will also provide wider bandwidths and high speeds for enhanced mobile broadband. The modems will also support both Non-Standalone (NSA) operation (where control signaling is sent over LTE), and Standalone (SA) operation (where all control signaling and user data are sent over 5G NR).

According to the company, they will be utilised in the next generation of high-end smartphones and help operators to execute early 5G trials and deployments. On the other hand, commercial products that will use the Snapdragon X50 modems are expected to be available to support the first large-scale 5G NR trials and commercial network launches starting in 2019.

The new model family will support multi-mode 2G/3G/4G/5G functionality on a single chip. It also supports integrated Gigabit LTE capability pioneered by Qualcomm Technologies and will become an important part for the 5G mobile experience. The first commercial products featuring Snapdragon X50 5G NR modems are expected to be available in 2019.
