Samsung Note 7R to be the refurbished Note 7 with a smaller 3,200mAh battery

As Samsung gears up to bring its Note 7 smartphone to the market once again, a new set of images coming from one of its factories in Vietnam hints at a phablet dubbed the Note 7R (R for refurbished) that packs in a smaller battery in a device that looks identical to the earlier fire-prone Note 7.

The images come from a Vietnamese website samsungvn (via Android Central) and showcases a Samsung Note 7 with a slightly smaller battery.

The new 7R unit features a 3,200mAh battery which is about 300mAh less compared to the troublesome 3,500mAh unit squeezed into the Note 7.

The change in battery size is evident in the Settings screen of the smartphone and it makes sense for Samsung because it will the new battery a bit more space inside the same old chassis.

The smartphone seems to have no cosmetic changes when compared to the original Note 7 model.

After going on sale late last year, Galaxy Note 7 units began to catch fire due to faulty batteries. After two recalls Samsung pulled down the product from store shelves and even sent across special fire proof boxes to customers who had purchased the device. Months later it was confirmed that the problem indeed came from the batteries which were supplied by Samsung’s SDI group and Amperex Technology.

The news about this Note 7R model comes soon after Samsung announced that it will soon resell millions of its recalled Note 7 smartphones as refurbished units instead of discarding them, which would lead to environmental hazards.
